About Us

The primary goal of English Language Arts instruction in North Carolina is to ensure that all students learn how to use language effectively in order to function as individuals and as contributing members of society. To that end, the office of high school English Language Arts develops resources and professional development to support literacy initiatives that enhance the teaching-learning process and promote improved student achievement on local, state, and national assessments.

The intent of the North Carolina English Language Arts Standard Course of Study (SCoS) is to establish competency goals and objectives for the teaching and learning of English Language Arts in North Carolina.
