About Us

The primary goal of English Language Arts instruction in North Carolina is to ensure that all students learn how to use language effectively in order to function as individuals and as contributing members of society. To that end, the office of middle school English Language Arts develops resources and professional development to support literacy initiatives that enhance the teaching-learning process and promote improved student achievement on local, state, and national assessments. Teachers are encouraged to use formative assessments, evaluate data generated by these assessments and modify, enrich or enhance their teaching to meet the needs of all students.

The Literacy Program is comprised of staff that supports reading and writing instruction at the school level (K-12) in general education, intervention and special education settings. Our primary mission is to provide differentiated support for all WCPSS teachers to increase their capacity to maximize the literacy development of every student.
