About Us

Most Wake County students may choose to study a second language in the third grade and continue through the twelfth grade. At certain program magnet schools, students may begin studying a second language in kindergarten and/or elect to study a less commonly taught language, such as Chinese, Italian, Japanese or Russian. The majority of Wake County high schools offer French, German, Latin and Spanish.

Benefits of Second Language Study

  • Greater understanding of other peoples and cultures
  • Clearer insight into the structure of the English language, specifically structure, syntax and vocabulary
  • Higher scores on the verbal section of the SAT and other standardized tests
  • More flexibility in thinking processes through problem solving, conceptualizing and reasoning
  • Enhances career potential in the U.S. and abroad
  • Increases travel opportunities for business, education or pleasure
